Background and Experience

From White House portraits to mouth-watering food and beverage shots to weathered cowboys riding the range, or the honor of photographing Native American Indians, Michael W. Rutherford has the ability to capture the emotions, the story, and the very spirit of the moment.

The moment may be spontaneous or the result of careful planning, but making it real, and communicating it to the viewer, now that is where Mike Rutherford excels.

His work is instantly recognizable, and his distinctive style has made him one of the most sought-after and awarded photographers for commercial photography.

His documentary photography has been met with great acclaim around the world. He has authored numerous books, including The American Cowboy and Timeless Ireland.

Michael studied painting in college, but his desire for adventure and the ability to earn a paycheck led him to photography.

His first love has always been painting and after 40-plus years as a world-class photographer, he is combining his love of painting with his photography to create mixed media artwork.

Michael and his wife, Deborah, reside just outside of Nashville, Tennessee. He was raised in the Midwest, attended Southern Illinois University, and later moved to Nashville, TN in 1983 to open his studio.

Michael continues to work on special assignments for clients and is in demand for speaking engagements, plus creating meaningful mixed-media paintings in his spare time.

The Michael W. Rutherford Photo Artistry business venture originated when friends and colleagues kept asking for copies of Michael’s images and paintings to give to their friends and family. Now, they are available for everyone.
